PhD- Creative Writing & History 2024

How ambiguous loss and postmemory affects the intergenerational memory of the lost men of the SS Isolda.

PhD examining post memory and ambiguous loss connected to the sinking of The Irish Lights tender SS Isolda (1940). The creative work was a series of interlinked short stories using information from interviews with both victim and survivor families, and archival documents to commemorate the crew and their widows. The critical thesis explored why the use of magical realism, metafiction and inclusion of archive documents mined the emotional history of one tragic event with lasting consequences.
